"... your lecture on the Taubman method ... was extremely lucid and well-prepared. My student who worked with you... was highly enthusiastic about the help you provided, and I was impressed with how much you accomplished in the master class in such a relatively brief amount of time. Many of my students are still energetically talking about your lecture ..."
Douglas Weeks

Professor of Piano
Converse College, South Carolina

"I firmly believe that the audience and our students will be grateful to you for introducing them to the Taubman Technique, which will ease their creative performance now and in the future."
Nuri Iyicil, Director

"The lecture was very well attended by our own members and non members also. Those present agreed that it was well worth bringing Ms Dybvig here and we all learned a great deal that we could apply to teaching our students and relating to them personally."

The Balanced Pianist

The Balanced Pianist is a set of intensive programs for small groups of pianists, high school age and above, amateur and professional. In The Balanced Pianist programs, pianists improve their practice, performance, and teaching skills while growing to enjoy all these activities more. Participants work on improving their technique, mental attitudes for practice and performance, teacher-student communication, and enjoy some type of scheduled movement during each day. Our main resources are Dorothy Taubman's Approach to Piano Technique, Performance Success by Don Greene, Ph.D, the Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles systems, and yoga, Alexander work or other scheduled exercise. We remove tension, fear, and frustration from our bodies, from our practice and performance, and from our teaching, and what remains is all positive!

Taubman Approach

Teresa Dybvig gives a variety of lectures, clinics, and master classes on the Taubman approach to piano technique. This work is so rich that you can study it for a lifetime. What follows is sample of talks your group can hear. All of them can be made longer, some can be made shorter, and there are many other topics to explore.

  • The Profound Simplicity of the Work of Dorothy Taubman, a one-hour introduction to the background and essential tenets (alignment, movement, how the piano can help us) of the approach

  • The Pianist's Essential Alignment, forty-five minutes on the essential alignment from bench height through elbow and wrist to knuckles

  • Should We Do That? One hour on unfortunate misconceptions of traditional piano technique

  • Playing It Safe, one hour on how all instrumentalists can avoid injuries

  • An Introduction to the Work of Dorothy Taubman, two hours on the background, uniqueness, and basic tenets of the approach
Lectures are often combined in workshops with master classes for performers or children, private lessons, clinics (e.g., on fingering), and recitals.

Teresa Dybvig has given lectures and workshops on the Taubman Approach to piano technique in University of Wisconsin at Madison, WI, Emory University, GA; Mount Holyoke College, MA, Eastern Michigan University, MI, Northwestern University, St. Paul, MN, Jones County Jr. College, MS, OMTA, Cleveland, OH, Converse College, SC, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, TN, WMTA Convention, LaCrosse, WI, Bilkent University, Ankara, Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory, Istanbul, Hacettepe University, Ankara. She was the guest artist/clinician at the North Dakota Music Teachers Association State Convention in October 2003, where she gave a series of lectures, clinics, lessons, and classes. She has also presented Taubman work in the context of The Balanced Pianist programs in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Music by Women

Teresa Dybvig's lecture-recitals on music by women focus on two questions:

  • Why don't we know any music by women?

  • Why should we teach music by women?
Both lectures contain performances of music by women, new and old, for concert or for teaching. Louise Talma, Lili Boulanger, Nazife Güran, Deniz Ülben Hughes, Marianne von Auenbrugg, Elizabeth Turner, Emma Lou Diemer, Clara Schumann, Fanny Hensel, Judith Lang Zaimont, Ruth Schonthal, Ursula Mamlok, and Amy Beach have made their way onto these programs.

Teresa Dybvig has given lecture-recitals on music by women for the Chicago MTNA, Amherst Music Festival, Mississippi State University, MS, Delta State University, MS, Mt. Holyoke College, MA, Roberts Wesleyan College, NY, Suffolk Piano Teachers Forum, NY, and Association of Piano Teachers on Long Island, NY.

Learning Styles

Teresa Dybvig is involved in an ongoing study, with learning styles expert Sarah Church, on applying the Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles system to teaching piano. She would be happy to speak with your group about how she has learned to spot a student's learning style, and how she has learned to work with different people's learning styles -- especially those students who learn differently from oneself.

Teresa Dybvig has spoken to the Fond du Lac Teachers Association and the Suffolk Piano Teachers Forum about Teaching the Student, not the Material: Applying Learning Styles to Teaching Piano. She has also presented it in the context of The Balanced Pianist programs in Long Island, Chicago, and Denver in 2004, 2005, and 2006.
